    Well Child Care Health Tips

    Baby Talk

    Age 0 - 2 Years
    • Immunizations (“Shots”) protect your baby from 12 very serious diseases. Make sure your baby gets all of his/her shots on time.
    • ALWAYS put your baby to sleep on his/her back to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Also avoid putting soft bedding or toys in the crib.
    • Keep your baby’s immunization card in a safe place and bring it to every doctor visit. If you have questions about immunizations, talk with your baby’s doctor or nurse.
    • Keep your baby away from people who are smoking. Smoke may cause asthma in babies.
    • Show your baby colorful picture books and talk about the pictures. Sing simple songs and say nursery rhymes over and over.
    • Sing, talk, and play with your baby every day. Look at your baby and repeat the sounds he/she can reach for them.
    • Use a rear-facing car seat for your baby on every ride. Buckle him/her up in the back seat, away from the air bag.
    • Always keep one hand on your baby when he/she is on a bed, sofa, or changing table so he/she does not roll off.
    • Make your home safe before your baby starts to crawl.
      • Put away small objects and things that break.
      • Tape electric cords to the wall; put covers on outlets.
      • Put safety gates at the top and bottom of stairs.
      • Store poisons and pills in a locked cabinet.
    • Always watch your baby in the bathtub. Drowning can happen quickly and silently in only a few inches of water. Take your baby with you if you have to leave the room.
    • Play, read, and talk with your baby every day. Repeat songs and nursery rhymes the he/she likes.
    • Each child develops in his or her own way, but you know your child best. If you think he/she is not developing well, you can get a free screening. Call your child’s doctor or nurse of you have questions.

    Toddler's Corner

    Ages 2 - 4 Years
    • Are your child’s “shots” up to date? If they are, your child won’t need any more shots until the age of 4.
    • Offer your child a variety of healthy foods every day.
    • Brush your child’s teeth at least once a day with a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.
    • Help your child enjoy active games like catch, tag, and hide-and-seek. Give him/her simple toys to play with like blocks, crayons and paper, and stuffed animals.
    • Keep cleaning supplies and medicine locked up and out of reach.
    • Keep matches and lighters out of reach.
    • Offer a variety of fruits and vegetables daily.
    • Water is a healthy drink. Offer it instead of sweet drinks with snacks. Your child still needs about two cups of milk everyday.
    • Make sure your child uses a helmet whenever he/she rides a tricycle, scooter, or other toys with wheels.
    • Children learn best by doing. They need to:
      • Play active games (tag, ball, riding toys)
      • Play imagination games (using dolls, figure toys, story books)
      • Use toys that use their hands
    • Booster car seats are for big kids! Use a booster in the back seat with lap/shoulder belts until your child is all enough for adult seat belts.
    • Make sure your child knows their address and telephone number. Teach them how to call 9-1-1 in an emergency.
    • Teach your child to stop, drop, and roll on the ground if their clothes catch on fire.
    • Make sure any guns in the home are unloaded and locked up.

    Children's Corner

    Ages 5 - 10 Years
    • Continue to take your child for a check-up each year with a doctor or nurse.
    • Make sure your child receives a dental check up every six months.
    • Encourage your child to enjoy books by reading together. Let him/her practice reading simple books to you. Continue to read books to your child. Visit the library to pick our exciting storybooks.
    • Keep healthy snacks available. Your child needs fruit, vegetables, juice, and whole grains for growth and energy.
    • Practice safe walking and bike riding. Have your child teach you how to watch for cars and cross with the light.
    • Have family safety practices in your house; test the smoke alarm and change the batteries when needed; have fire drills and practice escape routes and crawling under the smoke.
    • Make sure your child wears a helmet when using bikes, skates, inline skates, scooters, and skateboards.
    • You and your child should exercise 20-30 minutes each day. This is an important habit for your child to learn.
